Dreier Pays Tribute to Fallen Peace Officers
May 15, 2006
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas,CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, made the following statement today in recognition of National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, which is held annually on May 15:
"When our peace officers patrol their beats and keep an eye on our neighborhoods, they are walking the line, courageously enforcing our laws. They put themselves in harms way so that we may live in safety and without fear. Today’s service honors all those peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of public service and public safety. We pay tribute to their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice prevails. They are local heroes and national treasures, and we mourn every loss."
President John F. Kennedy established the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in 1962 to honor the lives of peace officers who died in the line of duty. This year marks the 25th anniversary of holding a National Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service, and it occurs during National Police Week.
