Transportation

Transportation plays a major role in quality of life, and I believe that people, businesses and neighborhoods should have access to a variety of safe, reliable transportation choices.

The Thirteenth District of Georgia includes five of the fastest growing countries in the country, therefore, building and maintaining a strong transportation infrastructure is vital to economic development of the entire state.

There has been growing alarm about congestion and sprawl in urbanized areas, and increased concern about maintaining access to the national transportation system in surrounding and rural areas. I am concerned that without significant changes to our current transportation policies, the metro Atlanta region will not see improvements in air quality and congestion. For this reason, I have made transportation issues one of my main priorities as I serve you in Congress.

Since being elected in 2003, I have been actively working to bring the beneficial highway and rail projects to bring to fruition in the district, including the proposed Macon to Atlanta commuter rail line. In 2006, the first leg of the line is projected to begin operation through the 13th District district from Lovejoy to Atlanta. The next extension of the rail line from Lovejoy to Griffin is currently under consideration by the Governor, the Georgia DOT, and local communities on the rail line.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
September 11th dramatically changed air travel, and I promise to support effective ways to ensure that passengers are safe while making certain that airlines and airports of all sizes can still operate efficiently.

The world's busiest passenger airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, is located in my district and is a major employer in Clayton County. In Congress, I am a member of the Congressional Noise Abatement Caucus, which is comprised of members who represent airport communities, and believe that while the Atlanta Airport is a major economic force in Metro Atlanta, the airport must be a good neighbor to surrounding communities.

As Hartsfield-Jackson continues to modernize and expand its current facilities to accommodate current and future traffic demands, I will continue to fight for 13th District neighborhoods affected by environmental factors associated with the Airport. These factors include the fifth runway construction, planes flying outside of their established flight patterns, and general runway noise.
