SPALDING & BUTTS COUNTIES

In 1851, Spalding County became the 96th county in Georgia when the state legislature formed it from parts of Fayette, Henry and Pike counties. The county was named after Thomas Spalding, the first Georgian known to have successfully harvested cotton and sugar cane.

In 1825, the Georgia state legislature formed Butts County from parts of Monroe and Henry Counties, making it the 64th county in Georgia. The county was named for Samuel Butts, a militiaman killed during the war of 1812 and the county seat, Jackson, was named for Andrew Jackson. Butts County is home to the oldest state park in the United States, Indian Springs.
