Pearce Hails News that Nearly 70,000 Southern New Mexico Seniors Have Obtained Prescription Drug Coverage; Urges 100% Participation by May 15 Deadline
72% of all 2nd Congressional District Medicare beneficiaries now have prescription drug coverage; Pearce district offices have met with thousands of seniors to enhance understanding and encourage participation in new Medicare prescription drug benefit

Washington, Apr 28 -

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce today hailed a report from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that nearly 70,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Southern New Mexico had obtained prescription drug coverage as of April 18, 2006. The sum constitutes 72% of the total number of Medicare beneficiaries who reside in the 2nd Congressional District.

Since last November, Rep. Pearce’s district staff has met with thousands of seniors across the 2nd Congressional District in order to explain their options and provide sign-up assistance for the new Medicare prescription drug benefit. Rep. Pearce’s district staff has also trained others to do the same, creating a “multiplier effect” regarding the amount of help that is available to seniors as they strive to take advantage of this important new benefit.
“I am delighted that so many of our seniors are now receiving the prescription drug assistance they deserve,” Rep. Pearce said. “According to two recent polls, most seniors believe this program meets their needs – a Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Poll discovered ‘that most seniors enrolled in a Medicare drug plan are satisfied with their plan and are not having trouble getting the drugs they need,’ while the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has reported that ‘[a] large majority of seniors (84%) enrolled in the Medicare prescription drug program are satisfied with their drug coverage and a majority (52%) say they are enjoying a significant cost savings.’
“With the May 15 sign-up deadline rapidly approaching, I urge every eligible New Mexico senior to explore their options. My staff and I stand ready to help. Working together, we can achieve 100% participation.”
Seniors interested in obtaining information or sign-up assistance from Rep. Pearce’s staff should call or stop by one of the Congressman’s four district offices. Phone numbers and addresses for each are as follows:
