Congressman Pearce Appointed Chairman of National Parks Subcommittee

Washington, D.C., Jun 9, 2005 - Today House Resources Committee Chairman Richard W. Pombo (R-CA) announced the appointment of Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) as chairman of the Subcommittee on National Parks.

“During his short tenure as both a member of Congress and a member of the Resources Committee, Congressman Pearce has truly distinguished himself as an effective, dedicated lawmaker,” Chairman Pombo said. “He is a rising star in Congress and I have every confidence that he will surpass all expectations as a subcommittee chairman. The American people will be well served with the gavel of the National Parks Subcommittee in Steve’s hands.”

“I am deeply honored to assume the chairmanship of the Subcommittee on National Parks; a post which will help me promote the wealth of natural treasures that America is so blessed to possess,” Rep. Pearce said. “I thank Chairman Pombo and the House leadership for the trust that they have placed in me through this appointment, and I look forward to working with them to protect and enhance our national parks for the enjoyment and enrichment of generations of Americans.”

The Subcommittee on National Parks is one of the most active in Congress as it has oversight jurisdiction over the National Park Service and its management of the 388-unit National Park System. Specific issues tackled by the panel include, but are not limited to: reducing the system’s maintenance backlog, ensuring balance between access and conservation in management policies, boundary adjustments and protecting private property rights.

Congressman Pearce also serves as an Assistant Majority Whip and is a member of both the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Financial Services Committee.
