Pearce to Chair Full Resources Committee Hearing Tomorrow on Impact of Border Security upon Federal Lands
Devastation of national treasures and threat posed by drug traffic, terrorism often overlooked in assessing effects of porous border

Washington, D.C., Aug 4 -

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce (2nd District, NM), Chairman of the House Resources Committee’s National Parks Subcommittee, announced today that Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo (11th District, CA) has asked him to chair a field hearing of the full Committee tomorrow on the impact of border security upon America’s federal lands.

The field hearing will begin at 10:00 am PDT in West Hills High School, 8756 Mast Blvd., Santee, California.

“During my tenure as Chairman of the National Parks Subcommittee, addressing this often-overlooked effect of porous borders has been one of my top priorities,” Rep. Pearce said. “Our national treasures have been severely damaged by illegal activity along the border; while National Parks, National Forests, wilderness areas, and wildlife refuges have become attractive conduits for drug traffic and potential conduits for terrorists.

“Understanding and resolving this issue remaines an essential component of our efforts to secure the border”

The Resources Committee has announced that the following individuals are scheduled to appear as witnesses at the hearing:

Steve Borchard
District Manager, CA Desert District
Bureau of Land Management

Victor Manjarrez
Deputy Chief Patrol Agent
U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Chris Ingram
Vice President
Gulf South Research Corporation

Carolyn Powers
Jamul, CA

Judy Keeler
Animas, NM

Jim McGarvie
Vice President
Off-Road Business Association

Ambassador Thomas A. Nassif
