Pearce Statement on N.M. Supreme Court Decision on Voter Identification
Pearce to Introduce Companion Legislation to Protect Integrity of the Ballot

Washington, Sep 28, 2004 - Congressman Steve Pearce issued the following statement regarding the New Mexico’s Supreme Court decision regarding voter identification.

“I am extremely disappointed the court has ruled against common sense. If citizens are not disenfranchised by being required to show identification at the movies, to board an airline, or when purchasing alcohol and tobacco products, how can they be disenfranchised when the integrity of the ballot is at stake?”

Tomorrow, Pearce will introduce companion legislation to S. 2818, authored by Senator Pete Domenici, which would amend the Help America Vote Act of 2002 by extending the existing federal identification requirements to individuals who have not registered in person with their authorized government entity.
