Pearce Announces Grant for Hobbs Fire Department

Washington, Nov 17, 2004 - U.S. Representative Steve Pearce (R–NM) today announced the Hobbs Fire Department will receive $205,921 in federal grant money from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to support the nation's firefighters and the services they deliver.

Hobbs Fire Department submitted an application for a grant from the Operation and Firefighter Safety Programs. They will receive the funding for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and modifications to their fire station and facilities.

“Hobbs will benefit greatly from the training, equipment and safety improvements this grant will fund for their fire department,” Pearce said. “It is vital that we support fire departments in maintaining the safety and effectiveness of their operations.”

For the 2004 program, Congress appropriated, and President Bush signed into law, $750 million in direct assistance to firefighters to improve the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, volunteer and combination departments protect 55 percent of the population.
