Thomas on Judge Samuel Alito Nomination

October 31st, 2005 - WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Craig Thomas today issued the following statement regarding President George W. Bush’s nomination of Judge Samuel Alito for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

“Judge Alito not only offers the insight of an experienced judge, but by all accounts -- the temperament of Chief Justice Roberts,” Thomas said. “He’s a quality pick.”

“This is a time for all Senators to provide advice and consent on the president’s judicial nomination, not a time for partisan politics. I will do my best to keep the Senate debate focused on the nominee’s qualifications. Judge Alito should have broad support – a nominee who can unite our support, rather than divide it,” Thomas said.

“The American people need highly qualified, fair-minded and independent judges who uphold the Constitution and the rule of law.

“I will carefully review the nominee’s credentials and plan to see a fair hearing process. I look forward to meeting with him. It’s time to get this position filled and move on with the business of the nation.”
