Voting Rights Act
The Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution held a series of oversight hearings in the 109th Congress ( 2005 and 2006 ) to examine the impact and effectiveness of the VRA since 1982, and over the last forty years, and its continued relevance in protecting minority voting in the future. These hearings laid the foundation for legislation to extend the Voting Rights Act (H.R. 9) for another 25 years. H.R. 9 passed the House overwhelmingly in a bipartisan vote (390-33 margin) on July 13, 2006.
