Tour of the Higlands Stewardship Area (April 12)
BIRDSBORO -- Standing under an umbrella held by Berks County Conservancy Executive Director Verlin Renner, Rep. Jim Gerlach addresses a crowd before a recent tour of parts of the Highlands Stewardship Area. The Highlands area is a more than two million-acre forested region stretching from Reading through northern New Jersey, southern New York and western Connecticut. The region provides and protects the drinking water supplies for over 15 million residents of the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas. Rep. Gerlach co-sponsored legislation that would increase funding for land conservation partnerships throughout the area. The bill, H.R. 1964, passed the House on November 21 of last year and is now awaiting action in the Senate.
