WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Congressman Peter DeFazio announced today that the House passed the fiscal year 2007 Foreign Operations, Export Financing and Related Programs Appropriations bill, which included grant consideration for important projects for Albany-based Hydration Technologies, Inc., and Oregon State University. DeFazio requested funding for both projects earlier this year.

Hydration Technologies, Inc., has created a forward osmosis individual water purification system, which can be used in places where contaminated water is prevalent to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, and lower rates of illness among children. These water purification systems can be incorporated into infant formula packaging, guaranteeing individual mothers sterile fluids from any water source, or can be used to provide bulk water at clinics and hospitals around the world. If funded, the grant would be used to test the efficacy of the purification system.

Oregon State University's Program for Water Conflict Prevention and Resolution would provide specialized resources and skills to prevent and resolve water conflicts. Water that crosses boundaries often creates disputes between users. If funded, the grant money would be used to reduce conflict by supplying decision makers and water professionals with specialized resources and skills to prevent and resolve conflicts.

Next step: The Senate has not yet acted on its version of the fiscal year 2007 Foreign Operations, Export Financing and Related Programs Appropriations bill. Once the Senate has acted, a conference committee will be formed to resolve differences between the two bills before a final bill is approved by both bodies and sent to the president for his signature.
