Osage Beach, Mo. – Calling for common-sense policies that both protect the environment and promote economic growth, U.S. Senator Kit Bond today gave the keynote address at the Missouri Chamber of Commerce's 12th Annual Environmental Conference in Osage Beach.

"We all recognize that it is imperative to protect the environment and that we must have environmental standards that are strong and enforcement which is vigorous," said Bond. "But we can find ways to better protect the environment while avoiding unnecessary harm to our economy."

With signs pointing to a growing economy, Bond said it is more important than ever to protect the environment while at the same time encouraging further growth.

Bond said that while most Missourians support trade and exports, the social-security age locks on the Mississippi River, first built for paddlewheel boats, has required 13 years and $70 million to study.

"This is good news for our foreign competitors, but bad news for our shippers of grain, coal, steel, petroleum and other products. It is also, without a doubt, bad for the environment. How much environmental sense can it make to undermine barge traffic when one medium barge can carry the freight of 870 diesel trucks?"

"In June, Missouri topped the nation in job growth," said Bond. "The national economy has produced 1.5 million jobs since last August. The unemployment rate is down. Home ownership is at an all-time high and inflation is low. The economy is growing, as is consumer confidence. We need to keep this economy growing."

Despite these positive signs, Bond said some in Congress have proposed raising taxes.

"Higher taxes are the last thing a recovering economy needs," said Bond. "The best fiscal policy is a growing economy and disciplined spending."

Bond added that if we utilize science and innovation and set standards that are wise and enforce them, we can protect and enhance our environment without harming our domestic producers or the workers they employ.

"I recognize that you are the ones who create jobs," said Bond in his address to Chamber members. "I want to be helpful in ensuring that the jobs you want to create are created right here in Missouri."

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry and The Missouri Bar are hosting the 12th Annual Environmental Conference, the Midwest's premiere environmental event.
