WASHINGTON, D.C. - - U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof (R-MO) today announced the U.S. House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee has approved its version of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2003 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill. This measure contains language requested by Congressmen Hulshof and Akin that provides continued funding for the Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action Project (WSSRAP), located near St. Charles, Missouri. Senator Bond requested and obtained similar language in the Senate version of the bill, virtually assuring the provision will become law.

"Many constituents have contacted me about the future of this decade-long cleanup project. Getting this language will ensure funding for the remaining cleanup activities and long-term stewardship funding at the Weldon Spring site. Though some issues still need to be resolved, this is clearly a positive development. I look forward to continuing my work with community leaders, DOE, Senator Bond and Representative Akin to achieve an outcome that is satisfactory to everyone," said Hulshof.

Last year, the Department of Energy (DOE) anticipated it would complete remediation efforts at Weldon Springs in 2002. However, DOE now expects cleanup activities to continue into next year. Since the DOE did not budget for efforts beyond 2002, the language obtained by Hulshof, Akin and Bond ensures that funding will be available to complete the project. The House language also ensures that DOE will adequately fund post-cleanup stewardship activities.

"The communities surrounding Weldon Spring can rest assured that DOE will fund any remaining cleanup at the site. While omission of cleanup funds in the President's Budget was probably an oversight, this language will guarantee there is no gap in cleanup funding next year," said Bond. "I will also continue to work with the Missouri delegation to ensure that Weldon Spring remains safe for future generations and never again poses an environmental or health hazard to the families of Missouri," Bond said.

The House and Senate are expected approve the final version of the FY 2003 Energy and Water Appropriations bill soon after the August District Work Period.
