July 1, 2005 Reid: President Bush Should Use This Opportunity to Bring Nation TogetherReid Releases Actuality on Justice O’Connor’s Retirement
Washington, D.C. – The Senate Democratic Communications Center released the following actuality featuring Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid commenting on the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
Actuality is available for download at:
The text of Senator Reid's actuality follows:
“Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is an inspiration to all Americans. As the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, she blazed a trail that many will follow.
“Through the years, she's been a voice of reason and moderation on the Court, and it's vital that she be replaced by someone like her - - someone who embodies the fundamental American values of freedom, equality and fairness.
“As the process of selecting her replacement begins, President Bush should use this opportunity to bring the country together, not to tear us apart. It’s what President Reagan did when he nominated Justice O’Connor.
“I urge President Bush to follow Reagan's lead, and to work with the Senate to identify a highly qualified candidate who, like Justice O’Connor, will guard our individual rights and make all Americans proud.”
