Statement of Senator Harry Reid on Way to Avoid Potential Nuclear Shutdown

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today:

“Over the last several weeks, I have had many conversations with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle about how to avoid the ‘nuclear’ path Senator Frist is leading us down.

“There’s widespread concern about throwing away 200 years of constitutional checks and balances in order to get 7 judges on the bench who previously could not achieve bipartisan consensus. There is a way to avoid the nuclear shutdown, and I’m working with my colleagues to put that plan in place. The bottom line for the Democratic Caucus is to protect constitutional checks and balances. As part of any resolution, the nuclear option must be off the table.”
