Reps. Meek & Ryan Joint Statement on Bush Plan to Privatize Social Security

More about Kendrick Meek

Congressmen Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL) and Tim Ryan (D-OH) released the following statement on President Bush’s Social Security plan and its effect on younger Americans:

“Today’s Republican pep rally for Social Security privatization is bad news for America’s young people. No group of Americans has more reason to fight privatization of Social Security than today’s young workers. The Republican proposals to cut benefits and add trillions of dollars to the debt means that millions of young people will be forced to work into their seventies and pay higher income taxes for the rest of their lives.

“Social Security will be secure for the next 50 years. But Republicans keep saying that Social Security won’t be there for younger Americans. If they get their way, they’ll be right.

“That’s why Democrats are fighting to strengthen and improve Social Security for America’s young workers. We want to ensure that every American working today will get the secure retirement they have earned through a lifetime of hard work. Social Security is the only safe and secure source of retirement income for millions of Americans, and it must be protected.”

Reps. Meek and Ryan are Co-Chair’s of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi’s 30 Something Working Group, which seeks to speak and listen to the concerns of young Americans.
