CLACKAMAS COUNTY TO RECEIVE NEARLY $700,000
FOR HEAD START
SMITH AND WYDEN ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR HEAD
START PROGRAM
January 6, 2004
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S.
Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) announced today
that the Clackamas County Children’s Commission will receive
$672,970 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) to continue providing Head Start services to children aged
3 to 5 years.
“Head Start teaches
life skills to Oregon’s youngsters and provides communities
with lasting benefits,” said Smith. “Clackamas County
Head Start programs will now continue to give kids a better chance
at using potential that otherwise may have gone untapped.”
“Highly effective
programs like Head Start foster literacy and prepare Oregon’s
children for success in school,” said Wyden. “Education
is one of the keys to Oregon’s economic future, which is
why I strongly support the mission of Clackamas County’s
Head Start programs and am pleased to see them receive this critically
needed funding.”
The Head Start Program created
in 1965, is a federal program in the Administration of Children,
Youth and Families in the Department of Health and Human Services
which provides childcare to underprivileged children.
