Washington, DC – Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR)
and Gordon Smith (R-OR) today announced the Port of Portland
will receive $2,182,083 to make runway improvements and security
enhancements at Portland International Airport. Funding will
be used specifically to provide additional security equipment
and to preserve the quality of the airport’s runway. In
2002 alone, more than twelve million passengers flew through
Portland International Airport.
“This grant will help Portland International
Airport undertake proactive security efforts to ensure the safety
and security of passengers,” said Wyden. “Improving
transportation security is essential not only to safety, but
also to the economic prospects of Portland and all of Oregon.”
"PDX is one of our greatest assets in bringing
new industry and economic possibilities to Oregon," said
Smith AImproving the vital safety components and general usability
of our state=s largest airport is a top priority."
The Portland International Airport is receiving
this grant through the Federal Aviation Administration’s
Airport Improvement Program, which helps public-use airports
execute planning and development enhancements. The program allows
for safety, capacity, security, and environmental improvements.
