LOGAN
Tuesday, August 2, 2005
Senator Harkin visited the Logan-Magnolia School to meet with school officials, teachers and parents. Logan-Magnolia received a $1 million Harkin School Construction Grant in 2002 to build additional classrooms for preschool, special education and after school programs.
After visiting Glenwood we traveled to Logan-Magnolia to view the improvements that have been made to the school. I toured the beautiful new room that holds math and talented and gifted programs. Before constructing the new room, the math and talented and gifted teacher had a room not much larger then a desk. The students had to go use the library for their classes.
While visiting Logan, I had the opportunity to visit the Iowa Communication Network (ICN) room. I first worked with Governor Terry Branstad in the 1980's to create the network. The ICN can be used by schools to offer classes that the school cannot support such as advanced math and science or foreign language. It can also be used by local government to better communicate across the State. I am interested in how schools are using the ICN and what challenges the schools face in incorporating ICN into their curriculum.

QUOTE
"Anytime you build a new building, you generate more pride in the school district. I know the community is very proud of district and is proud that they could add additional classrooms without raising local taxes."
- Jim Hammrich, Superintendent, Logan Magnolia
