Pryce: Republicans Deliver Affordable Drugs for Seniors
|
WASHINGTON [Error Occured] 14
Since January, seniors throughout the country have been able to sign up for the new Medicare prescription drug benefit passed by Congress at the end of 2003. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, more than 24 million seniors are receiving low cost prescription drugs through Medicare Advantage plans, new stand alone prescription drug plans, and employer and union plans. House Republican Conference Chairman Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio) today called on House Democrats to spend less time criticizing the Medicare prescription drug benefit and more time helping seniors sign up for the program.
“Two years ago, Republicans delivered on a promise to the American people and passed a comprehensive Medicare prescription drug benefit for America’s seniors,” Pryce said. “To date, millions of seniors have signed up for more affordable and accessible prescription drugs. Unfortunately – and inexplicably – Democrats don’t seem to think affordable prescription drugs are a good idea. In fact, the House Democrat leadership is encouraging Democrat members to use Congress’ upcoming district work period to scare seniors away from signing up for this benefit. (Roll Call, Feb. 13, 2006, Page 3)
“This is a dereliction of responsibility. Seniors who fail to sign up for the program by May 15 will face a penalty for late enrollment. Instead of spending their recess unleashing scare tactics to criticize the first real prescription drug relief America’s seniors have seen, Democrats could make better use of their time by signing up more seniors for this benefit, so every member of our greatest generation can afford the prescriptions they need.”
