The Discovery of Another Border Tunnel Underscores the Importance of Passing the House's Border Security Legislation This Week

An article in this morning's Washington Times reported that federal agents have discovered a border tunnel reaching from Calexico, Calif., to Mexicali, Mexico:

"U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents in San Diego yesterday announced the discovery of a cross - border drug - smuggling tunnel beneath a private residence in Calexico, Calif., that extended nearly 400 feet to a house in Mexicali, Mexico. The tunnel, which ran 20 feet underground and was accessible by a ladder, was equipped with lighting and supported by wooden beams every few feet, said John S. Fernandes,

DEA special agent in charge..."Whether they are designed to smuggle drugs, people, weapons, or other contraband, these tunnels pose a threat to our nation's security,' said Michael Unzueta, special agent in charge for ICE [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] investigations in San Diego. . . . At least 39 tunnels along the U.S. - Mexico border have been discovered by authorities since the September 11 attacks, the vast majority in and around San Diego and Nogales, Ariz. "

The existence of these dangerous tunnels is just one more reason why the House is taking action this week on a series of bills that will help improve border security, including a bill that will criminalize the construction or financing of border tunnels. The Border Security Enhancement Act, which the House is expected to vote on this Thursday, will also stiffen penalties for anyone caught trying to smuggle aliens, contraband, drugs, weapons, or terrorists via a border tunnel. Our nation can't sit idly by while smugglers, terrorists and other dangerous individuals cross our borders through the use of unauthorized tunnels.

It's time to take action, and action is just what House Republicans are providing.
