Pelosi, House Democratic Leaders Call on President Bush to Reject Chairman Thomas' Divisive Social Security Proposals

Washington, DC -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Whip Steny Hoyer, Caucus Chair Bob Menendez, and Caucus Vice-Chair James E. Clyburn released the following statement today, prior to President Bush's meeting with House Republicans on Social Security.

"To date, Republican proposals on Social Security have focused on drastic benefit cuts, trillions of dollars in new debt, and the false promise of privatization.  They are a recipe for disaster.  But today, Republicans have the opportunity to move past those irresponsible ideas and reach for real solutions to the challenges facing Social Security.

"The President should publicly reject Chairman Thomas' suggestion of cutting Social Security benefits for women and providing different benefits for minorities than for whites.  And House Republicans should reject the trillions in new debt needed for the President's reckless proposal for private accounts.

"Democrats stand ready to address the challenges facing Social Security, but the President must put forward a proposal that does not reduce Social Security funding, harm the middle class, or cut guaranteed benefits.  And he must truly reach out to Democrats.  The President's call for bipartisanship on this issues rings hollow when he says he wants to work with Democrats, but then meets only with Republicans."
