Hoyer Breaks Ground for New Post Office in Greenbelt

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Monday, February 28, 2005

GREENBELT, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today joined Greenbelt Mayor Judith “J” Davis, and members of the City Council to break ground for the Greenbelt Post Office. Congressman Hoyer has been working with the City Council for the past several years to begin construction of the new modern facility. It will provide delivery service to more than 12,000 customers and is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2006.

“It has been a long time coming for this new post office. We have signed on the dotted line and now, we can turn a little dirt. Today is a day to celebrate and to give our thanks and congratulations to all of you for the years of hard work that went into making this post office a reality,” said Congressman Hoyer.

“Tim Haney and his colleagues at the postal service made a great decision when they selected Greenbelt for a new post office, and I am pleased that Biscayne Contractors Inc., located in Prince George’s County, will be doing the construction,” Hoyer added. “I am confident that we will be back here soon for a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the doors to new Greenbelt Post Office.”

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the future location of the new 20,364 square foot Greenbelt Post Office on a five-acre lot. The new building will be home to 55 postal employees who deliver service to 12,200 customers. It will incorporate a new Postal retail Store and three retail workstations as well as 1,368 post office boxes. The property will accommodate 30 customer parking spaces and 2 handicapped spots.
