Rogers’ Green Technology Bill Strengthens National Security, Boosts Economic Security

Thursday, September 28, 2006 – Legislation introduced today by U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, MI-08, will boost development of green technologies to power American-made cars and strengthen national security by helping get America off its dependence on foreign oil.

“This is about strengthening both national security and economic security,” said Rogers, who serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the legislation. “Getting America off its economically draining dependence on foreign oil and building up our own economy is crucial for the future of our nation.

“American innovation is built on the imagination and ingenuity of every generation.  In my generation it was putting men on the moon, and for my children’s generation it will be how we say no to foreign oil.”

The measure establishes a $20 billion green technology vehicle incentive program to provide loan guarantees geared toward plant retooling, production, and commercialization of energy-efficient and gasoline-saving vehicles.

Rogers said the legislation “would dramatically accelerate the commercialization of American-made hybrid electric, clean diesel, and flexible fuel vehicles, giving the U.S. more jobs, cleaner air, and renewable domestic energy sources.

“In addition to helping reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and reducing pollution, the legislation has the positive effect of encouraging investment and development in the United States.”
