Statement by U.S. Rep. C. W. Bill Young
regarding former Congressman Mark Foley
____________________________________________

First, on a personal level as a father and a grandfather, I find Mr. Foley’s activities to be revolting, disgusting, and totally immoral.  As a member of the same Congress that he served in, I also find it reprehensible that he violated the trust of these youth and of the American people he was elected to serve.

Second, I want it to be clear that I had no knowledge of any of these allegations until the afternoon of September 29, 2006 when my colleagues and I in the Florida Congressional Delegation learned of Foley’s resignation from the House and the circumstances surrounding his decision.

Third, anyone who had any knowledge of this situation and did not report it to a proper authority and worse yet attempted to cover it up should definitely be held accountable for their actions.

Fourth, it is important to move forward to put in place whatever rules and policies are required to prevent something like this from ever happening again with respect to the page program.

This situation goes far beyond politics.  It is a moral issue that needs to be thoroughly investigated at all levels and where necessary punitive action must be taken against those whose action, or in some cases inaction, may have put the safety of our pages at risk.
