Kelly: Dover Volunteer Firefighters to Receive $114,974 Federal Grant
November 10, 2005

Federal Assistance Will Be Used for New Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Sue Kelly and the J. H. Ketcham Hose Company in Dover Plains announced today that the department will be receiving $114,974 in federal funding assistance to support local fire operations and firefighter safety measures.

The money was secured through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and can be used for first responder training and equipment.

“We appreciate being considered and granted this grant,” said Chief Richard Yeno. “It will help our fire department greatly in updating our self-contained breathing apparatus.”

Self-contained breathing apparatus are devices worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and other first responders to provide breathable air in a smoke-filled or otherwise dangerous and hazardous environment.

Congress funds the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program in order to provide grants directly to local fire departments. The grant money supports the efforts of local first responders and the services they deliver.

“Volunteer firefighters at the J. H. Ketcham Hose Company and throughout Dutchess County devote their time and energy around the clock to protect our local neighborhoods, and it is critical that they have the equipment and resources they need to respond quickly and safely to local emergencies,” Kelly said.

“This federal assistance helps ensure the safety of Dover Plains volunteer firefighters while they keep our communities safe,” Kelly added.
