Congresswoman Secures Funds to Help Protect Open Space, Improve City Parking Needs
WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Sue Kelly has obtained $652,000 in federal funds to aid transportation, recreation, and open space needs in the City of Beacon.
Kelly obtained the money for Beacon in the Transportation Equity Act, which reauthorizes the federal aid for surface transportation program through 2009. Congress today approved the final version of the legislation, which Kelly co-authored as a senior member of the House Transportation Committee.
Kelly wrote provisions into the bill that will bring federal funding directly to towns and villages in the Hudson Valley to help them improve their roads and transportation-related infrastructure.
For Beacon, she obtained $252,000 to make improvements to the Hudson River Greenway Trail along the Beacon waterfront. The funds will help the City of Beacon protect open space along the Hudson River and make travel and recreation safer and easier for local residents.
Kelly also secured $400,000 in federal transportation funding for Beacon to construct a municipal parking lot, which will help meet downtown parking needs and alleviate traffic congestion.
“Transportation and open space are two very important issues in our daily lives, here in Beacon and throughout the Hudson Valley,” Kelly said. “This money for Beacon is a very worthwhile return of federal transportation funds to our area to enhance our City’s trail and pedestrian access, conserve our open space, and ensure City parking needs are being met.”
