SEVEN NORTH MISS. FIRE DEPARTMENTS GET FIREFIGHTING GRANTS
Federal lawmakers say money will help improve safety
WASHINGTON, DC-The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved fire safety grants for seven volunteer fire departments in north Mississippi, federal lawmakers said Thursday.
U. S. Rep. Roger Wicker and Sens. Thad Cochran and Trent Lott said the funds will go to enhance fire safety operations, purchase new equipment and vehicles.
The awards to boost operations and enhance include:
· Belden Volunteer Fire Department, $26,125
· Rhodes Chapel VFD, Chickasaw County, $20,924
· Pisgah Community VFD, Alcorn County, $68,869
· Northeast Benton VFD, Benton County, $47,054
· Eudora VFD, DeSoto County, $35,293.
Two departments in Prentiss County secured funds to purchase new vehicles. Thrasher VFD will get $156,750 and Altitude-Hills Chapel VFD was awarded $152,000.
The awards come from the Assistance to Firefighters Program approved by Congress and administered by FEMA. The program provides funds to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, health and safety programs, purchase of new firefighting equipment, and improve emergency medical service response capabilities.
