Biography of Congressman Anthony D. Weiner
9th District of New York

[Photo of Congressman Weiner on the Capitol steps] Anthony Weiner has been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 1999. He represents the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn.

Weiner began his career in public service in 1985 as an aide to then-Representative Charles E. Schumer. He worked for Schumer for six years, serving in both his Washington D.C. and New York City offices.

In 1991, at the age of 27, Weiner became the youngest person ever elected to the New York City Council, where he developed a reputation as a thoughtful legislator and a rising star. The Daily News called him one of the "Leaders of the Twenty-First Century" and the New York Times pronounced him a "bright...and gifted speaker."

Weiner was elected to Congress in 1999, taking the seat vacated by Schumer when he was elected to the Senate. As a Democratic Whip, Weiner is a leading spokesman for Democrats across the nation. New York Magazine has called him "an ascendant force in New York politics", PoliticsNY.com said "Weiner is a tireless worker, smart, committed to policy and a fighter for his district", and The Forward newspaper has lauded Weiner as one of the 50 most influential Jewish Americans.

Weiner sits on the Judiciary Committee , where his efforts have won him praise as a "tough on crime" Democrat from law enforcement groups. Weiner has successfully passed legislation increasing the availability of funds for DNA testing to solve crimes, establishing tougher laws to protect women from sexual predators and is the sponsor of the popular "COPS" program, which has put over 100,000 police on the streets nationwide.

After the attacks on September 11th, Rep. Weiner was the only New Yorker appointed by House leadership to the Homeland Security Task Force. As a member of the Task Force he has passed legislation to greatly enhance the flow of information between state and federal authorities investigating terrorist threats, and to overhaul building collapse investigations in the wake of the World Trade Center collapse.

Weiner also serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he sits on the Aviation and Highways Subcommittees where he is leading the fight to reduce airport air noise.

Anthony Weiner is single and lives in Queens.
