Congresswoman Watson to Deliver Opening Remarks at FCC Public Hearing on Media Ownership in Los Angeles, CA
Congresswoman Diane E. Watson will deliver opening remarks at the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) first in a series of public hearings on media ownership. The hearing date, time, and location are as follows:
Date: Tuesday, October 3, 2006
Time: 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Location: University of Southern California
Davidson Conference Center
Embassy Room
3415 South Figueroa Street
Los Angeles, CA 90089

In 2003, the FCC voted to relax media ownership rules, which would have allowed media companies significantly greater ownership of radio, television, and newspapers in a single media market. The Federal Court of Appeals, with the approval of the Supreme Court, later struck down the new media ownership rules and remanded them back to the FCC for further consideration. The FCC received over two million letters from citizens in opposition to its proposed ownership rule changes.

The latest round of public hearings represents the FCC's second effort to deregulate the media market, which could dramatically impact rules on localism, minority ownership, and various types of programming.

Go to the FCC homepage for further information on the public hearings.
