Biography

Pete was born in Gary, owns a home in Merrillville and is a life long resident of Northwest Indiana. He represents Indiana's First Congressional District, which includes Lake, Porter, Jasper, Newton and Benton Counties.

Pete has focused on improving our quality of life by working on three concepts that are important to people here; keeping jobs in steel, educating our children and creating employment opportunities for the future.

Growing up in Gary, Pete watched the hard work of his parents and their friends. Steel workers had a pension and something to look forward to. Partly because of his respect for their work and history, no one has worked harder to preserve jobs in the steel industry than Congressman Visclosky. He is working relentlessly to ensure retirees get their pensions and have healthcare. He is also fighting to reinstate the steel tariffs. When President Bush revoked the tariffs, Pete responded immediately by introducing HR 3699, the "Keeping America's Promise to Steel Act" to reinstate them. Pete is fighting every day to keep manufacturing and steel jobs in Indiana.

As the father of two boys, John and Timothy, Pete is fighting hard to reduce class sizes in our schools to allow teachers to have more time to spend on every student. Congressman Visclosky supported funding to hire 160,000 new teachers and introduced a resolution to Congress to fully fund education programs. The fight is not over and Congressman Visclosky will not give up.

Pete is looking to the future for our children as our parents' generation did for us. After our children finish their educations, Pete wants to give them the opportunity to return to Northwest Indiana to start a family and a business. That is why Congressman Visclosky secured funding for Purdue University to build a High Technology Incubator.

The future of Northwest Indiana is bright. Pete will continue to fight for good jobs, give our children the best opportunities and develop our infrastructure.
