Upton Helps Restore Berrien ISD’s E-Rate funding, Representing $300,000 for Internet Services for Area Schools
FCC had initially denied the Berrien ISD’s application for E-rate funding
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) today announced that the Federal Communications Commission has favorably responded to his appeal on behalf of the Berrien County Intermediate School District. The FCC made it official early this evening that it will grant the ISD’s request for continued discounts for computer and telecommunications equipment through the federal E-rate program. The ISD approached Upton in early September after their application for continued E-Rate funding was denied. Today’s decision represents approximately $300,000 to the Berrien ISD, which is the hub of Internet service for every school in the county. Upton urged the FCC Chairman, Kevin Martin, on September 21st to reconsider the initial decision.
“The FCC’s reversal is tremendous news for the Berrien ISD and our local students,” said Upton. “I am both relieved and delighted that the Berrien County ISD’s appeal for E-rate funding has been approved. Our schools in Southwest Michigan face ever-tightening budgets and our students and faculty were relying on this important discount for Internet services as they planned for the school year – if the appeal was denied, it could have been a budget buster for the ISD. It is imperative that our schools have the proper, updated technology for them to be competitive with the rest of the world. The E-rate discount helps our young people gain access to the high-tech learning tools that are so important to keeping our students competitive. These essential dollars ensure that we do not fall behind throughout the Intermediate School District.”
While the Berrien ISD had received E-rate funding for the past 8 years, their application for this year was initially denied. The ISD administers Internet services on behalf of its 14 school districts.
“The success of this appeal represents $300,000 for Berrien County’s ISD,” said Jeff Siegel, Berrien County ISD Superintendent. “It helps continue with our plan to include technology in the classroom and helps students prepare for the 21st century economy. We are especially grateful for Congressman Fred Upton’s expertise and leadership on this issue and helping expedite this appeal in such an effective and efficient manner.”
