Upton Honored as “Hero of the Taxpayer”

Nation’s leading taxpayer advocacy group honors Upton for record of keeping taxes lower for working families

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) was honored by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) with its annual “Hero of the Taxpayer” award during a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol.  Upton received the “Hero of the Taxpayer” award from the non-partisan group for his leadership in keeping taxes low for working families.  ATR presented the award to members of the House and Senate who vote with taxpayers on 85 percent or more of the issues most important to taxpayers - Upton voted with taxpayers 95 percent of the time.

“These key votes were the most critical for taxpayers in the second session of the 109th Congress,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.  “Looking at these votes, taxpayers back home can tell if they have a friend or an enemy in Washington.  As far as Fred Upton is concerned, they have a friend.  Constituents deserve to know who has worked for taxpayers’ interests, and not the special interests.  Representative Fred Upton is squarely on the side of taxpayers, and Americans for Tax reform offers thanks and congratulations.”

In addition to critical votes on the Death tax and other taxes, ATR also rated votes on free trade, spending control, and property rights.  Upton has signed ATR’s “Taxpayer Protection Pledge,” a written promise opposing “any and all tax increases.”  To date, the President, 223 members of the House of Representatives (including Upton) and 47 Senators have signed the pledge.

“Michigan families deserve lower taxes so they can keep more of their hard-earned money to save and invest for the future,” Upton said. “Michigan residents face among the highest taxes in the nation – we must continue working in Congress to put more money back into the pockets of hard-working families.  It is the right thing to do.”

Americans for Tax reform is a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all tax increases.  A complete list of ATR’s ratings for Congress, visit http://www.atr.org/national/ratings/index.html.
