Amtrak
Congressman Tierney is committed to Amtrak and a national commitment to rail transportation, for reasons that include our environment and economy. He believes that we need to take steps to reduce both air and auto traffic congestion. Though he has long supported efforts to ensure sufficient Amtrak funding, in light of the events of September 11th, he believes we must redouble such efforts.
Local Rapid Transit
Congressman Tierney has worked diligently to secure federal funding for extending the Blue Line to Lynn. He, along with Senators Kennedy and Kerry, sought federal funds to first explore and determine the best improvements for the North Shore Corridor area, and then to contribute partial construction funding. He was proud to help secure a $50 million authorization (the first such Federal commitment in the more than 30-year quest) in the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century (TEA-21), which was approved in the 105th Congress.
Subsequently, Senators Kennedy, Kerry and Congressman Tierney have worked to secure federal funding to undertake the most comprehensive assessment to date of our transportation system on the North Shore. This effort, which marks the first time the Federal government will be an active participant, will provide some options for consideration. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has recently commenced the study and now anticipates completion in the fall of 2003. In the meantime, he will continue to work with like-minded colleagues toward improving transportation in our area.
