November 10, 2005

Dear Friend,

As winter approaches, homeowners and businesses in our region and across the nation are facing unprecedented energy costs. Since 2001, gas prices have nearly doubled and heating prices have nearly tripled.

In Congress, I join like-minded colleagues in fighting to help Americans struggling with spiraling gas prices and home heating costs. We are supporting and calling for a vote on the Federal Response to Energy Emergencies (FREE) Act, which would protect consumers from price gouging by the energy industry. It is unacceptable that Americans are paying outrageous prices for gasoline and home heating fuels while big oil companies rake in record profits.

I also support the Gas Price Spike Act, which would impose a windfall profit tax on excessive profits by the oil industry from the sale of gasoline and diesel. The proceeds from this tax would be used to encourage the purchase of energy efficient vehicles and help provide reduced mass transit fares during times of gas price spikes.

Together, America can do better! The American people need relief at the gas pump and with their home heating costs. With strong public leadership, cooperation from business and individuals, and a commitment to shared responsibility, this country can reach its goals.

For too long energy policy has put wealthy oil and gas companies ahead of regular people, but I am working and promoting a better plan by pursuing greater energy efficiency and new energy sources.

Please know that I will continue fighting to help lower gas prices, increase our energy efficiency standards, protect electricity consumers, and invest in new sources of alternative and renewable energy.

Sincerely,

Signature - John F. Tierney
