IMPORTANT ALERT FOR VETERANS AND ACTIVE DUTY TROOPS
The VA recently announced that in addition to the 26.5 million veterans, 1.1 million military members on active duty, 430,000 members of the National Guard, and 645,000 members of the Reserves may have been included in the recent data theft of the names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and disability ratings. Importantly, the stolen data did not include any of VA’s electronic health records nor any financial information.
Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have launched a full-scale investigation into the matter. Authorities believe it is unlikely the perpetrators who stole the information targeted the items because of any knowledge of the data contents and remain unaware of the information which they possess or of how to make use of it. However, out of an abundance of caution, the VA is taking all possible steps to protect and inform veterans.
