Our nation's veterans selflessly stood in harm's way as the guardians of our most fundamental freedoms - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Todd is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our nation's veterans and their families by supporting legislation that fulfills America's promises to them both now and into the future.
Here are just a few measures Todd has supported that provide record funding for veterans programs:
Recent developments with concurrent receipt:
After many years of hard work, Congress has passed a provision to provide concurrent receipt for more veterans and retirees than ever covered by law. Previously, disabled veterans' retirement benefits were offset by the amount of disability coverage that they were eligible for. The new law rectifies that situation and provides full concurrent receipt of benefits for the most severely disabled veterans. The provision includes the following:
While this does not end the injustice of concurrent receipt for all of our veterans, Todd believes that it is an important first step. Retirement pay is earned by virtue of the veteran's long service on behalf of our nation. Entitlement to compensation, on the other hand, is for an entirely separate reason - because of service-related disability. A disabled veteran who does not retire from military service, but elects instead to pursue a civilian career after his enlistment expires can receive full compensation and full civilian retirement pay.
A veteran who has served his country for more than 20 years should have the same right. We should not be penalizing those who choose a military career, especially when civilian careers often involve fewer sacrifices and greater rewards. Todd pledges to continue to fight for full concurrent receipt as he has done so since becoming a Member of Congress.
