Rep. Tiahrt Welcomes Secretary Peters to Wichita
Tiahrt discusses issues facing the general aviation community with the new Secretary of Transportation

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today welcomed U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters to Wichita for an event at Cessna. Secretary Peters, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 30, 2006, visited Wichita to learn about issues facing the general aviation community.

“I am pleased to welcome Secretary Peters to the Air Capital of the World,” said Tiahrt. “We have several issues to discuss that deeply affect the aviation community, including the matter of user fees in this year’s FAA reauthorization.”

The visit consisted of a roundtable discussion with Sec. Mary Peters, Sen. Pat Roberts, Rep. Todd Tiahrt, other local leaders, and members of the general aviation community. The group then embarked on a guided tour of Cessna’s manufacturing facility and toured the Citation Mustang. The event concluded with a question and answer period with the media.

“General aviation is a diverse and vital segment of aviation and should not be harmed by a user fee approach,” Tiahrt said. “A main concern in the general aviation community is that user fees will stall the recovery of this important American industry.”
