President Signs into Law Terrorist Tribunal Legislation
Bill to Ensure Terrorists can be Prosecuted Opposed by Democrats

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) issued the following statement today after President Bush signed the Military Commissions Act of 2006 into law. This measure upholds the ability of intelligence agents and American Armed Forces to detain and interrogate terrorists and to bring suspected terrorists to justice. House Republicans approved this legislation in September by a vote of 250-170, with 162 Democrats voting against the ability to interrogate terrorists.

“The signing of this bill marks a critical step in finally being able to bring suspected terrorists to justice—including the masterminds of the September 11 attacks,” said Tiahrt. “Now our nation’s intelligence community and Armed Forces will have the resources they need to fight the War on Terror. I was pleased to vote for this important bill that will help keep our communities safe.”

Among other things, the Military Commissions Act of 2006 will create a new judicial system to prosecute terrorists, provide basic fairness in prosecutions, protect American troops on the battlefield, and satisfy international treaty obligations and applicable U.S. laws.
