April 7th, 2006 - - Washington, D.C. – House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis (R-CA) issued the following statement today on the FY07 budget resolution.
“I am disappointed that we did not pass a budget resolution today. Just like I did last year, I am prepared to move fiscally conservative appropriations bills expeditiously through the process within the tight constraints of the budget resolution. However, I cannot and will not support a resolution that greatly diminishes Congress’ ability to respond to national disasters and makes it more difficult for us to get our budget work done on time.
I am proud of the work House Republicans accomplished in last year’s budget. We eliminated 53 programs, reduced non-security spending below the previous year, cut earmark funding by nearly $3 billion, and avoided a massive omnibus budget package. It’s unfortunate that the whims of a few would prevent the overwhelming majority of our Members from once again enjoying similar budgetary success.”
