The Red Cross Movement began on the battlefield. Today, that same spirit is present in the American Red Cross services provided to active duty, National Guard/Reserve personnel and their families. In 2002, the Red Cross provided direct assistance to 523,660 military families. To provide this emergency support network, the Red Cross sustained a team of more than 26,000 volunteers and hundreds of paid staff in nearly 1,000 chapters across the United States, in 108 offices on military installations around the world and in two state-of-the-art communication centers.
Led by 1.2 million volunteers and 36,000 employees, the Red Cross annually mobilizes relief to families affected by more than 67,000 disasters, trains nearly 12 million people in lifesaving skills and exchanges more than a million emergency messages for U.S. military service personnel and their families. The Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products to more than 3,000 hospitals across the nation and also assists victims of international disasters and conflicts throughout the world. Red Cross offices are listed on the American Red Cross Web site at http://www.redcross.org/where/where.html. Local telephone books list Red Cross chapters, and base or installation operations have listings for on-base Red Cross offices. Contact your local Red Cross today.
