TANNER ENCOURAGES TENNSSEE VETERANS WASHINGTON – In honor of Memorial Day, Congressman John Tanner is encouraging Tennessee’s veterans and their families to share their stories of life during time of war. The Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project helps Americans archive these personal memories for future generations. “On Memorial Day, we honor those who have sacrificed to help keep our country safe,” Tanner said, “and we also remember the importance of preserving the stories, photographs and artifacts of those who have fought for our country in the past. A vital part of honoring those memories is to preserve them now.” The Veterans History Project has recorded stories from nearly 35,000 individuals who served in the military or in civilian support roles from World War I through today. The project works with students, veteran organizations, museums and libraries to collect and archive these memories to share with future generations. “Tennesseans have always played invaluable roles defending our country and continue to do so,” Tanner said. “Now we all have an opportunity to help honor the personal stories of the brave men and women who have, over the years, answered the call to duty, for which we will always be grateful.” Those interested in sharing their memories or gathering stories from others in their communities should visit the Veterans History Project or call toll-free 888-371-5848. # # # Contact: Randy Ford, 202.225.4714
