Congressman Sweeney represents all or parts of 10 counties: Dutchess, Columbia, Greene, Otsego, Delaware, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Warren, Washington, and Essex,.
Geography
The 20th Congressional District covers more than 200 miles south to north, from Poughkeepsie to Lake Placid, and covers west out toward the Cooperstown. A largely rural and suburban landscape, the 20th C.D. contains the majestic Adirondacks and Catskill Mountains, as well as the Hudson River Valley.
Several historic landmarks and points of interest include Lake Placid - site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games; Lake George and Lake Champlian; North Creek - site of Theodore Roosevelt's swearing in to the presidency upon the assassination of William McKinley; Fort Ticonderoga, Ft. Edward and the Saratoga Battlefield - site of the battle of Saratoga that turned War of Independence in the favor of the colonies; Saratoga Racetrack - ranked in Sports Illustrated's list of "Top Ten greatest sports venues in the world;" Old Kinderhook - Home of President Martin Van Buren; Hyde Park - Home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt; and New Lebanon - the ancestral home of the Shaker religion.
