SWEENEY SUCCESSFULLY FIGHTS AGAIN TO EXTEND DEADLINE FOR FLOOD VICTIMS TO APPLY FOR DISASTER ASSISTANCE

Washington, D.C. - Representative John E. Sweeney (R-NY) announced today that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and New York State Emergency Management Office officials had complied with his request that they extend the deadline to register for the June flood disaster aid.

“This is great news that the deadline has been extended to October 30, 2006.  I sought the extension to this deadline because I know how hard it’s been for people and know that they still need some time to get their affairs in order.  As the fall season brings cooler temperatures, we need to ensure that all damages caused by the June flooding have been addressed.  I am hoping the extra two weeks will provide our local officials and constituents the additional time they need to register for Federal aid if needed.  I am committed to working to see that flood victims in these areas have they assistance they need and look forward to continuing to seeing that all aid and assistance is made available,” said Sweeney.

Anyone who has had loss or damage from the severe storms and flooding that occurred in late June is urged to register for assistance by calling the toll-free FEMA tele-registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY, 1-800-462-7585. Victims also can register online at www.fema.gov.

The registration period and the deadline apply to the major federal disaster declaration on July 1 that enabled individuals and business owners in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Orange, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Tioga and Ulster counties to register for federal recovery assistance.

Applicants may qualify for help under a wide range of federal programs such as temporary housing assistance or assistance for disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. It is important to register with FEMA even if you have registered with a local or national voluntary organization.
