POINT LOMA FUEL PLUME

In February 2006, the U.S. Navy disclosed that a plume of fuel product in the ground water beneath Naval Base Point Loma is migrating north toward private residences in the neighboring community of La Playa. I have created this page on my web site to provide the community with information on this important subject.

The Navy, in conjunction with regulatory agencies like the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (CRWQCB), has taken immediate action to address this development with both short and long term solutions. Some of that work is detailed in links posted below.

I am focused on securing the federal funding that will provide a long term solution to the problem of leaking fuel tanks at Naval Base Point Loma. To that end, I have reached out to my colleagues in Washington to help appropriate these funds as quickly as possible. More information on that effort is posted below.

I am also committed to providing interested San Diegans with the information they need to understand and monitor this issue. On March 20, 2006, partnering with San Diego Councilmember Kevin Faulconer, a community forum was held where representatives from the Navy and CRWQCB spoke to over 200 local residents. Additional meetings are planned and will be announced on this site. In the meantime, I encourage those who have questions about this topic to contact my office or any of those listed below for answers. All of us will be happy to provide you with whatever information we have available.
