Ron, Snowe Introduce “MEND” Act to Enhance Drug Coverage Under New Medicare Law, Confront Spiraling Costs

February 2004

Left: Ron and U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) announce the bipartisan Medicare Enhancement for Needed Drugs Act (MEND Act), legislation that would strengthen the drug coverage offered to seniors under the recently enacted Medicare prescription drug benefit.

Ron and Snowe, who both voted for passage of the 2003 Medicare prescription drug bill, promised to work to improve the law and to strengthen seniors’ coverage in the 2004 session. The MEND Act attacks high prices in four major ways - by leveraging the market share of tens of millions of seniors into bargaining power, by breaking down barriers to re-importation of lower-cost drugs, by making Congress a watchdog against unfair price spikes, and by helping seniors know which plans get them the best prices for their drugs.

Right: Ron (right) and Snowe (left) share a laugh. The two have teamed up on the prescription drug issue before, introducing the Seniors’ Prescription Insurance Coverage Equity (SPICE) Act in 1999 and securing $40 billion in the Senate’s budget that year for prescription drug legislation.
