Washington,
DC- Ron and U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
held a press conference to introduce legislation that
would safeguard against the abuse of government credit
cards during hurricane cleanup. The Senators proposed
legislation to reverse the provision in the emergency
Hurricane Katrina spending bill that raised the credit
limits on government credit cards to $250,000. Their
proposal would restore the $15,000 limit set after September
11, 2001—a $12,500 increase over the previous
limit. As a result of previous incidents of government
credit card fraud and with over 300,000 cards in use
nationwide, the Senators want to do everything possible
to ensure taxpayer dollars are being well spent. The
Senators explained that while these cards are an effective
tool for many government employees dedicated to rebuilding
the region, Congress must still value accountability
during this massive spending effort.
