Stupak Announces Selection of Congressional Page

Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) has selected Alex Finch of Iron Mountain, Michigan to be a Congressional Page for the U.S. House of Representatives for the 2006 fall semester.   As a Congressional Page, Finch will be employed by the U.S. House of Representatives for a semester, while also continuing his high school studies in Washington, DC.

“Alex has an impressive record of achievement and he will benefit a great deal from this unique opportunity to see the legislative process up close,” Stupak said.  “While a number of extraordinary young people from across northern Michigan applied for the position and it was difficult to select just one, I believe Alex to be a smart, motivated young man who will bring a lot to the Page program.”

Finch is currently entering his junior year at Iron Mountain High School where he has been on the school’s Honor Roll for every semester.  Finch is involved in a number of extracurricular and community activities.  He has volunteered for the Caring House, local churches and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Fundraiser.  He is also active on his school’s golf team and enjoys snowboarding in his spare time.

"Being able to participate in our political process allows me to combine my love of politics with the ability to experience the political process firsthand,” Finch said.  “Even more important, being a Congressional Page allows me to contribute something back to our country.”

Through the House Page Program, high school juniors spend a semester studying in Washington and working for the House.  The fall program begins September 3, 2006 and ends on January 26, 2007.   Congressional Pages receive a stipend for their work and continue their high school studies during the program.  The program is overseen by the Clerk of the House of Representatives.  Pages have served the House for over 200 years.

“The Page program is an amazing opportunity for a young person to see how the House of Representatives works day in and day out,” Stupak said.  “I know Alex will benefit from this experience tremendously.”
