Rep. Stupak Statement on Hurricane Relief Efforts
WASHINGTON -- Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) offered the following statement on the state of disaster in New Orleans, Louisiana and surrounding areas due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
"Like all of Northern Michigan and Michigan citizens, I am angry and frustrated that lives are being lost in America because we were not prepared to deal with the aftermath of this natural disaster. Right now, if you wish to help, please send monetary assistance to the Red Cross or other relief agencies. As much as we all wish to, we cannot run down to New Orleans, Gulfport or Biloxi, Mississippi or send items because, at this time, we have no place to send them and we would only further clog up a broken disaster relief system.
I have been in contact with the Department of Homeland Security, Michigan State Police and representatives of a Michigan high tech company, Codes Spear, trying to help solve the interoperability issue - so that local, state and federal emergency personnel can directly communicate with each other to expedite relief efforts."
The following resources from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are available to send monetary contributions. Contributors are encouraged to designate intended donations toward the Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts to ensure all resources are delivered correctly.
